Chili cook off!!!

Unfortunately didn't win that trophy I intended to place upon the top shelf in the shop but there is always next time. Usually this is where I would think, "if you don't at first succeed, destroy all evidence you ever tried." Truthfully, I'm not even sure there was a trophy involved. After all was said and done we caught wind that coffee was somehow utilized in the victorious pot. So there in awe I stood having heard this little bit.... How do you use coffee in a chili??? If anyone has an inkling, kindly leave an enlightening comment please

We were told to expect around 100 people and as we pulled up we realized there was about 100 people just inside the front door!

Isaiah and I both entered our own vegetarian dish, this being my first chili ever I decided to "spruce it up." In doing so I added all your run of the mill spices as well as a few dashes of cumin and coriander. Judging by all the people who came back a second time with arm fully extended grasping their styrofoam bowls, I'd say I wasn't the only one who appreciated its distinctly variant flavor.

I'd say Alan is lookn pretty hungry there and by the looks of that devious grin Isaiah has on his face, he is provoking.

There is Victoria surfn outside the shop on the new table top. She came up with the design and welded the base for the piece.

Notice that the foot rail doubles to protect my plants on the window sill from clumsy feet.

As they are posted I will try to place links in the widget to the ---->. Also you know of anymore sites I need to look into kindly post them below.

Mommadukes came up for Valentine's Day so you know there was some over indulgent dishes whipped up. BTW the young lady above finished that whole plate and two small children...

P.S. the fried chicken was amazing while it lasted! Too bad the chicken-fried-steak was a bit of a "FAIL" but I'm pretty sure it will b way better next time around. There will b a different plan of action placed into effect.(Don't loose hope Red)

I love seeing progress. Thats Rich the welder standing in the center of his illustrious work.

Also love my big kid toys. Max(the pinball duder) and I drove up to Albany on one of the nastiest days we could possibly have chosen. We braved rain coming down sideways that turned our hour and a half ride into a four hour drive. Nor rain or hail could keep me away from child hood dream of one day owning an Area 51! I kinda wanna get a Time Crisis or Big Buck Hunter next. We shall see.....

Place is starting to look less and less like a front... proud we r lookn proper. Big thanks to Mommadukes for holding down the spot through some rough tides. With her spontaneous and wild but always delicious dishes, she quickly became a staple in this neck of the woods. Btw mom, people were pretty heated that you left town without doing ur York peppermint ice cream cake.

The long awaited moment has arrived. After months of promises and guarantees, we have finally nailed down a distributor for donuts and bagels. Syrena Bakery of Greenpoint notoriety has begun deliveries to much applause. Now you can finally get 'The Marty' (acme lox, cream cheese, red onion caper on a bagel) or pop in around 6:43 AM and grab a donut and Iced Coffee for 3 bucks. Coffee courtesy of Porto Rico Importers, by the by. Love you guys!

She and Barb left H'burg at 5AM in tow with chicken salad, fresh fruit, jams, homemade honey, an air conditoner, peanut butter fudge and ambrosia. She ran in the middle of Flushing Avenue to save a kitten that was discarded from a moving car. What would we do without her.

Come on down for some more home cooking by Mama Demarco. On the menu tomorrow will be a frittata of sorts, the famous chicken salad (chicken is being grilled as we speak), a variety of homemade jams for sampling and you know there is always a couple tricks up the old sleeve. The festivites start at 11am, but if you come around 9 AM you can watch the magic happen. See you tomorrow folks!!

We are back. We have decided to begin to update with some consistency.

After a wondrous weekend of Bushwick Open Studios and Mama Dukes coming into town. Things have began to come together.

Our menus are done and we will begin delivery soon.

We have a brazil espresso in right now that is fantastic.

Over the past week we have begun to do potato salads, a couple slaws, ambrosia salad, fruit salads, guacamole.

On the MENU for tomorrow is a summer soup and a surprise side dish!

The would-be first patrons to the Deli and General Store wandered in from the black hole that is Flushing Avenue after 8PM on Friday. The odd visitor here and there kept us company from the early evening until our eventual departure at around 11 30 (Drew, I must have a copy of your drivers license photo, it's brilliant).

After polishing off a deliciously cheap bottle of J&B at the space we finally called it a night. But not before putting several coats of shellac on our new counter and of course having the Bally's pinball machine set up. GET IT IN.

Chris returns Thursday night! As you have most certainly deduced this is the other guy writing. Things are moving smoothly. Food Inspectors are on hold. Distributors are dropping off equipment. February beckons. We are working as hard as we can to get everything in place for early February.

In other news...

The owners at The Loom have gone and made a pretty quality website. It contains info about each store and updates on building-wide events et cetera. We have our own page (found here). Kinda difficult maintaining this site, but we'll give it the old college try!

Passed with a purported 97%. Insert chincy graphic...

Nice! We had our doubts, but a pass is a pass and Chris came through. Now all that's left is Andrew breezing though his test half asleep.

A slight leak in the storefront area is being ironed out and all the walls, including the brick, will be creme(ish) matte. All with a sexy burgundy colour applied to the support beams and juicy black detail for the piping.

Oh, and by the way, the floor still looks great.

Floor Done

After much delay our floor problems have been solved thanks to Andy and the good people at Hoffman Floor Coverings based out of Long Island. We highly recommend their services for any size job.

Our new counter is being manufactured as we speak following a fallout with the nobs at Gotham Forest Products. Do not, I repeat, do not use Gotham for any job.

We will instead be using a red oak for our counter. As for projected start date. Owner Chris is taking his food prep/safety test this Tuesday. So we are shooting for end of this month as the earliest.

We are sprinting towards the finish line now. We can use all the encouragement we can get!

To be honest I am a coke man myself. However, there are the closeted Pepsi supporters hiding in the shanty towns and moving about from here to there with no real home. But that is a horse of an entirely different color.

Counterdown with a Dewars neat

So a while back we contacted Gotham Forest Products to maybe, possibly do some counter/shelving work at the del del. Fast forward and we have cemented our idea and are ready to move forward. We will be using a reclaimed heart pine (yellow pine) for our checkout counter and small bar style seating area towards the back, interior entrance.

Question: What is Antique Heart Pine??

Answer: Heart-pine is generally considered to be recycled timber from first generation trees (circa 1600s pilgrims and shit). Most of the trees were long leaf pines, many as old as 300+ years. There were probably some other pine species mixed in, but the predominate tree was the long leaf pine. There were approximately 80,000,000 acres of these trees and almost all were gone by 1900. This wood was the primary building material for homes and factories. It is now being recycled as heart pine. Most structures built after 1900 were from second generation trees and do not exhibit the tights rings associated with the first generation timber.

For a time being all things Deli and General Store (official name btw) slowed to an excruciatingly slow roll. Never bleak, but very uncertain was the general sentiment in and around 1087 Flushing...

Alas! Things are back on track my friends. After acquiring our meat slicer, juicer, panini press, record player and pending purchase of a prep table we seem to be heading in the right direction. Onward and upward as they say!

Summer Berry Soup

1 Cup Strawberries

1 Cup Raspberries

1/2 Cup Sugar

1/2 Cup Sour Cream

1/2 Cup Heavy Cream

1 1/2 Cups Water

1/2 Cup Light Red Wine

Place berries and sugar in a blender and puree. Pour into a pitcher and stir in creams until well blended. Add water and wine and chill. Then listen to Mick Jagger's hacky solo effort She's the Boss and laugh.

Activity abounds at 1087 Flushing in Bushwick (our physical address). With the addition/completion of several integral components in this past week, we are seemingly on track to become the greatest purveyors of sandwiches in the Tri-State area.

Latest Happenings

We are continuing to hone our offerings of breads and other baked goods.
Our architect, Allison, is generating floor plans as I type this.
The courtyard/main entrance to The Loom is nearly finished.
We will be at the Boar's Head facilities in Bushwick today.

We are taking our first steps toward attaining the perfect sandwich. At the moment our Pennsylvania crooner, Chris De Marco, is scoping out deli equipment in his home state.

He just reported that after going on a journey quest with the Unami people of the Delaware Valley, he just happened to come across a scale (pictured below). Or maybe it was the scale that found him?
